Spelt flour is an ancient food that many people throughout America are starting to consume. The flour is used to make products such as cereal, pretzels, bread, and pasta. This is a good thing, because the spelt grain provides a number of essential nutrients and health benefits.

Spelt flour is loaded with important mineral that the body needs for proper functioning. In a 38 g serving of spelt flour there is about 1.36 mg of iron. If a person doesn’t have enough iron, they may become fatigued and anemic. Iron is responsible for transporting oxygen to the body and for cell growth. Iron is especially important for women, where they should get about 18 mg daily. Men should get men around 8 mg. Spelt also has several other essential minerals like manganese, zinc and copper, which support healthy bones and the immune system.

Just one cup of spelt grains provides 19 g of fiber. Fiber is important for digestive health. Fiber also helps to lower cholesterol. Women 50 and younger should eat at least 25 g of fiber a day, and men, in the the same age group, should get 38 g daily, according to recommendations from The Institute of Medicine.

Spelt flour has many antioxidants. These antioxidants support the production and function of red blood cells and help to convert food into energy.

Spelt flour, in both white and whole-wheat versions, can be purchased in several health food stores.
