People suffering from gout may be happy to hear this exciting news about cherries. According to researchers, eating cherries daily can slow down symptoms of gout.
Symptoms of gout is painful, stiff and inflamed joints, which is a type of arthritis located mostly in the big toe.
Sufferers often describe the pain of gout as feeling like their great toe is being burned by a flame or skewered with a hot poker.
Normally, gout symptoms disappear in about three to 10 days. Gout attacks may occur months apart, however, gout can permanently damage your joints if it becomes a lifelong problem, where attacks are happening frequently.
In a study, 600 people with gout were instructed to eat specific servings of cherries. The participants who ate a 10 or 12 cherries a day, or consumed cherry extract, had a 35 percent lower risk of a back to back gout attack. The people who ate about 18 cherries a day, or used cherry extract, had a 50 percent reduction risk.
Cherries are known for fighting inflammation in the body. The alkaline fruit may also be beneficial because of its impact on uric acid levels.
Gout symptom occurs when a certain amount of uric acid in the blood forms crystals in your joints, and the pain associated with the condition is caused by your body’s inflammatory response to the crystals.
Other studies have found:
Eating two servings of cherries first thing in the morning lead to a 15 percent reduction in uric acid, and lower nitric oxide and C-reactive levels (which are associated with inflammatory diseases like gout.)
The researchers noted “the reputed anti-gout efficacy of cherries” as well as “evidence that compounds in cherries may inhibit inflammatory pathways.”
